The development of financial products (from index design to fully automated investment solutions), becomes increasingly driven by modern information technology: data and research providers use NLP to absorb and structure information while asset managers crowd-source IP or apply sophisticated simulation techniques in order to construct entire portfolios, to name just a few examples. In this increasingly complex and fast evolving world, it becomes impossible for institutions to be experts in every field. Hence, the interaction with best-in-class data, research, tool and IP providers becomes increasingly important. In this presentation, we will provide examples of the use of modern information technology in index construction.

This talk explores why hackathons are important instruments and forces of good and change for businesses. It discusses why organizations should use hackathons to engage more fully with the wider community, their customers, vendors and staff. It looks at the potential benefits, as well as the challenges of getting organizations to fully back and believe in the value and purpose of hackathons. It describes how organizations can foster ideas and develop an environment where ideas are seeded and tested and those worthy enough are developed and brought to market. It looks at how hackathons can instill a sense of urgency and show a method towards instant innovation for all products and general routine business activity. It illustrates why hackathons are good examples of experimenting at the edges and of then bringing the ideas, methods, and knowledge learned more centrally within an organization. The talk draws primarily on experience of doing this in retail banking.

Technologies such as cloud-based dynamic infrastructures can help you keep your application running at scale with the availability your customers demand, while giving you the flexibility your business needs to innovate at speed. But this assumes your application — and your organization — is ready for the dynamic cloud. Are you?

Changing any organisation is one of the hardest things to do in life. Driving change is the defining moment of many, if not most, careers. How do you do it? Indeed, can you do it? This talk will focus on navigating these challenges. Technology-driven change has been a constant for five decades, and its effects have hit every industry, and it only seems to be increasing. The rise of AirBnb and Uber proves that almost nothing is beyond reach. The quickest to exploit change often have been entrepreneurial start-up firms founded by individuals able to envision years ahead how this change would unfold and the resulting discontinuities. There are nearly 1,000 fintech firms trying to restructure financial services right now. In turn this has given rise to a robust venture capital industry. Declining returns elsewhere have driven fund managers to allocate ever larger shares to private equity and venture capital.

Development is always changing. The software frameworks we use go in and out of fashion all the time, but how much has the process of development itself changed in recent history? Developing new ways of development has to happen to move software forward. The talk is about the type of innovation whose technology is already proven, but whose moment hasn’t yet arrived. The audience will (hopefully) leave with a believable vision for what coding might look like for the next generation.
